Makanan tradisional/khas merupkan masakan dan minuman yang biasa dikonsumsi oleh masyarakat tertentu, dengan citarasa khas yang diterima oleh masyarakat tersebut. Bagi masyarakat Indonesia umumnya amat diyakini khasiat, aneka pangan tradisional, ibarat tempe, tahu, bawang putih, madu, temulawak, gado-gado, kacang hijau, ikan laut, ikan darat dll.

Disamping khasiat, masakan tradisional Indonesia juga mengandung segi konkret yang lain seperti: Bahan-bahan yang alami, bergizi tinggi, sehat dan aman, murah dan gampang didapat, sesuai dengan selera masyarakat sehingga diyakini punya potensi yang baik sebagai makanan. Pengemasan masakan yang pertama yang diketahui yakni menggunakan bahan-bahan alami yang tersedia pada ketika itu diantaranya : keranjang dari alang-alang, kantong kulit (bola tas), kotak kayu, vas tembikar, keramik amphorae, tong kayu, tas anyaman, dll. Makanan tradisional suatu tempat mungkin berbeda pada tempat lain, contohnya produk fermentasi dari ubi kayu di Jawa Tengah dan Jawa Timur dikenal sebagai tape, sementara di Jawa Barat disebut sebagai Peuyeum.

Ragam kemasan masakan tradisional yang sering dijumpai ibarat kemasan dengan menggunakan daun pisang, kelobot jagung (pelepah daun jagung), daun kelapa/enau (aren), daun jambu air dan daun jati.

Daun
Digunakan secara luas, bersifat kondusif dan bio-degradable, yang biasanya berupa daun pisang, daun jati, daun bambu, daun jagung dan daun palem. Lebih kondusif dipakai dalam proses pemanasan dibanding plastik.

Gerabah
Digunakan semenjak zaman dahulu, kondusif bagi materi pangan asal tidak mengandung timbal. Gerabah yang diglasir bersifat kedap air, kedap udara, bisa menghambat mikrobia, dan bersifat masbodoh sehingga cocok untuk mengemas materi pangan ibarat saus, madu, anggur, minyak, curd/dadih dll.

Pengemasan, di atas bertujuan untuk melindungi masakan dari kerusakan, juga merupakan daya pikat bagi orang biar tergiur menikmatinya.Pada perkembangannya, insan mulai memanfaatkan materi kemasan yang dibuat secara khusus untuk keperluan mengemas, yaitu dengan dibuatnya materi kemasan dari kaca, kemudian dari perunggu.

Salah satu jenis masakan khas tempat yang dikemas dengan daun pisang yakni lontong. Lontong yakni masakan yang terbuat dari beras yang merupakan penemuan dengan bertujuan untuk menikmati nasi dalam bentuk lain. Pada umumnya lontong merupakan masakan yang dimasak dan dikemas dengan menggunakan daun pisang.


Namun kini, sebab semakin langka atau sulitnya mendapat daun pisang, kemasan lontong sekarang dikreasikan dengan menggunakan plastik.Namun, mungkin rasa lontong dengan bungkus atau kemasan plastik tidak seenak jikalau menggunakan daun pisang. Bagi yang memiliki banyak pohon pisang di kebun, menggunakan daun pisang sebagai bungkus lontong mungkin menjadi pilihan yang cukup baik.

Namun perlu diingat, tidak semuadaun pisang baik dipakai untuk mengemas, dikarenakan sifat fisik yang berbeda terutama sifat fleksibilitas. Cara penggunaannya sanggup secara eksklusif atau melalui proses pelayuan terlebih dahulu, hal ini untuk lebih melenturkan daun sehingga gampang untuk dilipat dan tidak sobek atau pecah.

Seperti halnya pada pengemasan tape ketan, produk ini banyak mengandung air, sehingga dengan permukaan yang licin, rendah menyerap panas, kedap air dan udara, maka cocok untuk dipakai untuk mengemas.

Perbedaan sebutan/nama terhadap produk pangan tradisional serupa di banyak sekali tempat juga diikuti dengan perbedaan penggunaan kemasan untuk produk dimaksud.
